How Can Production and Logistics Be Truly “Green”?

September 8, 2025, BIBA, Bremen

Image: Heiko Duin

In the interests of climate protection and the energy transition, production and logistics, as the largest consumers of primary energy, must be persuaded to rethink: Away from compensation payments, towards the use of renewable energies, the application of efficiency technologies and the formation of flexibility measures. In this context, the BIBA - Bremen Institute of Production and Logistics is conducting research into future value creation in production and logistics systems based on a sustainable product life cycle. Circular economy and energy are key success factors here.

During the guided tour of the BIBA research hall, we will explore the question of how climate-neutral, competitive production and logistics processes can be created and implemented in order to generate added value for society. The tour is offered by BIBA in cooperation with the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Bremen-Oldenburg and the Lilienthal Volunteer Agency.

Innovation Community “Smartport Transfer” Celebrates Kick-off Event

May 22, 2025, Bremerhaven

Image: bremenports/momentkonserve

Advancing the ports of Bremen through digitalization and automation - this is the aim of the “Smartport Transfer” (SPorT) innovation community, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). On May 22, it will celebrate its kick-off event at the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven and is aimed at both experts and interested members of the public. The event will provide information on the objectives and further planning as well as funding opportunities for individual community projects. In addition, the aim of the kick-off meeting is to recruit as many additional members as possible from and around the ports in order to grow the SPorT community and establish it as a permanent structure for knowledge transfer.

SPorT is a joint initiative of the University of Bremen (LogDynamics), the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) and the ports of Bremen, which is being carried out as part of the federal DATIpilot funding program. The planned community projects will focus on the planning, monitoring and control of handling processes for containers and vehicles as well as general and bulk cargo. The community also wants to address the question of how shipping traffic and hinterland transportation, such as freight trains, can be linked to port processes using information technology. These technologies are not intended to be an end in themselves, but rather to increase the competitiveness of German ports and their resilience to market fluctuations and disruptions in supply chains through cooperative and people-centered design.

Within the scope of SPorT, science and industry are not only to enter into an open exchange in a joint innovation community, but also pull together within the framework of mutually coordinated measures and projects - in line with the DATIpilot program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Its aim is to transfer knowledge from research to practical application - while at the same time creating scope for the implementation of innovative ideas. This is where the activities of the new SPorT community come in, which aims to bundle the region's great creative and innovative potential in the field of maritime business and logistics. The main idea behind it: The challenges posed by dynamic developments in particular can be mastered more easily and better in close cooperation between research, practice and authorities.
