A Major Stakeholder in the Scientific Community for over 30 Years
BIBA – Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH was founded in 1981, and is therefore the oldest affiliated institute of the University of Bremen. It is one of the most internationally renowned research institutes in Germany. It has approximately 150 employees who are working in close collaboration with the university’s faculty of Production Engineering – Mechanical Engineering & Process Engineering. Most of the BIBA employees have a production engineering, industrial engineering or informatics background or are working in related areas of expertise.
Since, both with regard to its organization and the contents addressed, BIBA is closely connected to the departments of Planning and Control of Production and Logistics Systems (PSPS, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Freitag) and of Integrated Product Development (BIK, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Klaus-Dieter Thoben) of the faculty of Production Engineering, BIBA benefits from valuable incentives. The same applies to the collaboration with the International Graduate School for Dynamics and Logistics (IGS) and the competence and service center LogDynamics Lab. Both are located in the BIBA building and are part of the Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics (LogDynamics) of the University of Bremen, in which BIBA participates as well.
The engineering institute is committed to basic research as well as to application-oriented research, performs industrial contract research and is active in national and European research associations. Through its interdisciplinary work and international focus, BIBA is excellently positioned for the future. The changes in global economy are a challenge for enterprises in virtually all industries and of all sizes. They are becoming more and more integrated into cooperative, global inter organizational production and logistics networks with ever more complex and dynamic processes. In addition to the performance in the area of product development and production, nowadays, logistics as well is one of the critical success factors. Therefore, BIBA takes into account processes and products in its areas of focus, production and logistics.
