A decision support system for optimizing garbage collection on the basis of spatial data

The principal objective of the project is to develop a tool for optimizing waste collection in urban areas. There will be special emphasis on covering real life aspects such as topological information from digital roadmaps, any number of different waste fractions, collection rhythms as well as different collection and disposal technologies.
Apart from the operational tour construction and routing, the tool will also support long-term decisions concerning the build-up of new landfill sites, incineration plants or recycling installations and their respective locations. For this purpose the developped optimization algorithms will be integrated into a discrete event simulation environment.
As logistic processes take place in space, a Geographic Information System (GIS) will be used to visualize the computational results. It also operates as the user-interface the optimization and simulation procedures.
