AI-supported Assembly Workstation for Human-Robot Collaboration

Picture: Aleksandra Himstedt
In today's production landscape, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face the challenge of balancing between standardized series production and individual contract manufacturing. The mobile assembly workstation developed by BIBA at the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Bremen-Oldenburg uses human-robot collaboration (HRC) and artificial intelligence (AI) to support people in production environments and optimize assembly processes.
The collaborative robot (cobot) provides the required parts. Sensors and cameras are used to ensure the safety of the collaboration and collect process data. In addition, the Cobot from the manufacturer Igus is inexpensive to purchase compared to other collaborative robots. The mobile assembly workstation therefore stands for AI HRC support for people in production processes that can be achieved with a low use of resources.
