Today, on Girls’ Day – Future Day for Girls at BIBA – the atmosphere was really great: the girls were eager to explore technology, felt comfortable with us, and had the chance to try out lots of things, tinker, and get creative.

With the goal of bringing technology and research to life and sparking interest in STEM fields, we offered two workshops as part of Girls’ Day: “Women Researchers’ Workshop: Discovering and Designing Mycelium” from the MycelCreation project and “Hands-On Technology: Creative Design with 3D Printers and Laser Cutters” at the BIBA Hackspace.

In the mycelium workshop, the students learned what mycelium composites are and why they are of interest as a sustainable material. Step by step, they designed and crafted their own objects, including personalized candle holders, gaining hands-on insight into materials science and craftsmanship.

The Hackspace workshop offered insights into product design and manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing and laser cutting. The girls developed their own ideas, brought them to life digitally, and produced personalized giveaways—from keychains to small flower pots.

Best of all: they were allowed to take all their handmade creations home—which sparked a lot of excitement and beaming smiles. We thank all the participants for a successful day full of curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm. We’re already looking forward to the next time!
